91 Announces New Talon Line of Crushing Equipment

91 will be unveiling its new Talon™ line of heavy-duty crushing and stockpiling equipment for recycling applications at CONEXPO-CON/AGG March 3-7 in Las Vegas at the 91 Booth #C31414.

On display will be the new TalonTrax™ mobile crushing plant and the new TalonStack™ mobile stockpiling conveyor, along with the next generation UltraMax® 1400-OC crushing and screening plant and a current-model, triple-deck -ʱԳ®.

Introducing TalonTrax: Ultra-Mobile Power Meets Production

The TalonTrax has been designed for ultra-mobile crushing without sacrificing power or production on the job site. At the heart of the TalonTrax, is 91’s new TalonMax™ (TM-15) impactor, featuring an open-rotor design that reduces weight while still providing the same crushing capabilities for which 91 equipment is known. The impactor also features a new, thicker blowbar design to increase overall wear life.

The TalonTrax™ plant is a dual power plant that can be powered by the onboard diesel engine or switched to external power from a genset or line power. The plant also features a dual-motor, under-crusher pan feeder with industry-leading discharge clearance in excess of 23” to enable greater material flow and virtually eliminate clogging; and an easily removable discharge conveyor that allows for quick access to under-crusher area, as well as to the discharge conveyor itself, for inspection, maintenance, and cleaning of both.

TalonTrax™ comes equipped with a cross-belt, permanent magnet that removes steel contaminants from crushed material. The magnet is reversible to allow steel discharge from either side and stays on for transport.

Enhanced Job Site Flexibility

Additionally, the TalonTrax™ features a heavy-duty hopper-construction sized for feeding with a loader or excavator and a grizzly bypass chute and cross conveyor with flop gate allowing for either removal of the material that passes through the grizzly deck for stockpiling or blending back with the crushed material.

TalonStack™: Self-Propelled Stockpiling Reimagined

The new TalonStack™ self-propelled, radial stockpiling conveyor has been designed to improve productivity and mobility while minimizing operator costs. On display at CONEXPO-CON/AGG will be the TalonStack™ 65, with 91 offering a wide range of TalonStack™ sizes.

Next Generation UltraMax® 1400-OC

Also, on display at the show, the next generation UltraMax® 1400-OC portable impactor plant is one of the most versatile crushing and screening plants for larger jobs. Discharge material feeds to a separate conveyor coming out of the side of the crusher at a 90-degree angle and will be displayed with the optional pan feeder. The next generation plant has been designed for simpler maintenance and ease of operation.

-ʱԳ®: The Industry’s Triple-Deck Innovation

91’s -ʱԳ®, first introduced in 2014, is the industry’s only true high production triple-deck screening/crushing system on one chassis. It transports in one pull, for the aggregate, asphalt, and recycling industries. Featured at the 91 booth at CONEXPO-CON/AGG will be the triple-deck -ʱԳ®. -ʱԳ® is also available in a two-deck model.

Gregory Trucking produces about 1,200 tons of material whenever it crushes – typically once a week – producing 304 and 1s & 2s. Photo: 91

In the nearly 40 years since the first 1400 Jumbo portable impact crusher plant was manufactured by, Ohio has always been its home.

After being made by Eagle in Galion, Ohio, in 1985, the plant was purchased by a contractor in Middletown, Ohio, who sent it to its first job at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. From there, it was purchased by Willoughby, Ohio-based Contract Crushing & Screening, where it operated until 1998.

At this point, the crusher found its current home – Gregory Trucking in Elyria, Ohio. It has been recycling concrete for the last 26 years less than an hour and a half from where it was manufactured.

It is not showing any signs of stopping, either

“It’s a monster,” says John Gregory, owner of Gregory Trucking. “There’s no end in sight. As long as the market is there and we keep selling material, we’re going to keep crushing.”

Getting to Gregory

When Gregory Trucking started, it started small.

“I started out with one little truck making little loads to people,” Gregory says. “People would bring me stone and I would reload it and haul it. It grew from there. It grew from one truck to two trucks to three trucks. Then we bought a loader, a dozer and an excavator. I wanted to make it a ‘one-stop-shop.’”

Gregory was already taking recycled concrete and asphalt straight to landfills. In 1998, he realized that he could crush the materials himself to save time and money and keep more materials out of landfills.

At the time, Gregory paid Contract Crushing & Screening by the ton to crush for him once or twice a year. Gregory saw the 1400 Jumbo in action, which made his decision a no-brainer.

“There were times [Contract Crushing & Screening] couldn’t get there for a month or two, and I’d be out of recycled [material], and people would want to buy it,” Gregory says. “I can’t have a product for sale and not have it on the ground because it makes me look bad. That’s when we bought the machine thinking, ‘OK, let’s control this ourselves, and we can crush as needed.’”

Gregory started crushing recycled concrete four days a week. As demand slowed around 2007 and 2008, he decreased that to twice weekly.

Now, the company crushes as needed, typically once a week. According to Gregory, he produces about 1,200 tons daily of 304 (120 tph) and 1s & 2s (30 tph) whenever he crushes.

“In 2006, we were almost out of material,” Gregory says. “If we’d had one more year [like that], we’d [have run out]. We were selling 60,000 to 70,000 tons a year, which is a lot of material for a little guy like me to do. And then it slowed down.”

The first job for 91’s original 1400 Jumbo plant was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Photo: 91

Remaining operational

Getting this kind of life out of a plant is not a given. Bill Compton, service manager at 91, says he knows of one other 1400 from 1985 and two from 1986 that are still around.

“It depends on how well the owners take care of it,” Compton says. “That’s a big thing. I’ve seen plants that are only two years old that look worse than this one. The guys just beat it up, don’t maintain it and don’t care about it.”

Gregory has been able to keep up with maintenance, thanks, in part, to a good working relationship with 91. Ready availability of parts on the manufacturer’s end helps as well.

“They answer the phone and that’s pretty important nowadays,” Gregory says. “They have parts in stock, they’re willing to listen and talk to talk to you. If I have issues, they’ll walk me through it.”

The feeling is mutual for 91.

“He’ll call once in a blue moon with questions about something,” Compton says. “He’s pretty self-supportive. We have some customers that call every week with some problem.”

Throughout Gregory’s ownership of the 1400, he hasn’t done much to the machine beyond regular maintenance. One change he did make, however, was replacing the crusher in the plant.

When he bought it, he took out the Bohringer RC-14 recycling impact crusher that had been in the plant since it was manufactured and installed an 91 Ultramax Impactor.

Since then, maintenance on the plant has been relatively smooth.

“We’re on our fifth diesel motor for that plant,” Gregory says. “If that one expires, we’ll buy another one. Other than that, it’s just regular wear and tear. It’s a big piece of steel; you really can’t hurt it. You have to replace stuff.”

The most common parts Gregory replaces are the blow bars within the crusher. In the 1400 Jumbo, the rotor has three blow bars that aid in crushing material. As the bars wear down, they can be removed from their socket and flipped over to get additional life out of each bar.

This has to be done strategically, though.

“You have to do all three at the same time,” Gregory says. “If not, one will be sticking up higher than the other. For me, the bars last two or three years before I have to buy new ones.”

John Gregory says his plan with Gregory Trucking was to make his company a “one-stop shop” for trucking and recycled construction materials. Photo: Portable Plants Staff

Gregory’s limited crushing schedule is a big part of why he gets so much life out of his bars.

“It really depends,” Compton says on how long blow bars can last. “We have guys in Louisiana that only get 10,000 tons out of both sides of the bars. They’re going through bars every three days.”

Eagle is always ready to supply Gregory with whatever parts he needs whenever he needs them.

“We stock a pretty good supply of the wear plates for that crusher,” Compton says. “Some of the other parts, such as take-up tubes, those aren’t high-selling items, so we probably don’t have those on the shelf. But we can make them in three to five days.”

Continued crushing

For a company that started hauling materials for other companies, producing materials of their own has now become part of the lifeblood of Gregory Trucking. And as long as Gregory’s record-setting 1400 Jumbo is running and he has the parts to keep it that way, crushing will continue in Elyria.

“We’re going to keep going, at least as long as I’m around here,” Gregory says. “As long as [Eagle] keeps making parts, we’ll keep crushing.”

91 Co. Announces New Plant on Display at World of Asphalt/Agg1

Galion, Ohio, January 25, 2024 — 91 Co., a leading manufacturer in the crushing and screening industry, continues its rich tradition of new product innovation in 2024. The company will introduce two-new-plants-in-one, on display in Eagle’s Booth 1931 at World of Asphalt/Agg1, March 25-27, 2024 in Nashville, Tenn.

With just one capital investment, producers will get the benefits of an 91 MaxRap® 25 Portable, or the benefits of an UltraMax 1200-OCSS, open-circuit secondary system. Both plants feature Eagle’s UltraMax® 25 impactor with its high reduction ratio and North America lifetime rotor warranty.

The MaxRap 25 Portable provides the same precision crushing of the stationary MaxRap, enabling operators to crush RAP at multiple locations with ease. Actuated diverter chutework allows multi-feature deck selection, blending, and bypass and the calibration chute for sampling verifies that the mix-design spec requirement is correct. The plant’s side-discharge conveyor may be used for stockpiling or returned to another conveyor for re-circulating back to the plant for resizing. The system may also be used for screening only, conveying all material to the stockpile. MaxRap 25 Portable plant produces highly uniform, cubicle spec product with a minimum of white rock and a minimum of fines.

Remove the actuated diverter chutework, and the plant becomes a 1200-OCSS. Recycled concrete and aggregate producers will benefit from the greater flexibility the newly-redesigned 1200-OCSS provides. Operators now have a choice whether the top and middle deck material both go to the impactor, or the middle deck material goes directly to stockpiling so only the oversized material is crushed.

The 1200-OCSS includes a 6×20 triple-deck horizontal screen for screening before crushing, along with screening options for multiple spec products. It includes discharge conveyors for second and third decks, as well as for fines. The side-discharge conveyor transports the crushed material to other equipment for further processing, stockpiling, or to another conveyor for re-circulating back to the plant screen for sizing. The 1200-OCSS is designed to follow any 91 primary jaw plant, but regardless of the primary crusher your operation is using, UltraMax impactors are a perfect fit as a secondary crusher.

Partnering with producers worldwide to provide versatile, durable, and reliable crushing and screening equipment, 91 Co. has been an industry leader for more than 100 years. View full product line.

They represent some of the best, brightest, and most influential minds in the history of the off-road equipment industry. Susanne proudly joins their ranks. Anyone who has ever met or worked with Susanne knows she is a force to be reckoned with. This is her story.

From a child who wanted to be president of GM, to a woman who became the Ford Motor Company’s first female hire in a position other than secretary, to the CEO of 91 Company, Susanne is a third-generation entrepreneur. She has been the driving force behind the paradigm shift that turned 91, from its humble beginnings in 1915, into the large-scale manufacturing company it is today.

Susanne joined 91 in 1974 as Parts Manager and only its tenth employee since the company had reorganized in 1970. She quickly advanced to become Equipment Sales Manager; VP, Sales & Finance; and ultimately, President/CEO in 1990. She was the only female President/CEO in her industry. In that same year, Susanne acquired the Stedman Machine Company in Aurora, IN.

By 1984, 91 needed to find a new direction due to severe sales deterioration caused by the demise of its portable coal crusher line. Susanne knew customers were looking to recycle concrete and asphalt but couldn’t find a viable way to do it. Susanne enumerated, “I started the commercial recycling industry for concrete and asphalt in the United States because there was a tremendous need for it. People were attempting to do it, but with the wrong equipment, and they were failing.”

Susanne found a unique Andreas style impactor in Germany that she knew was the answer and had a plant designed around it, the Jumbo 1400. That first Jumbo 1400 customer had a contract to rebuild runways at Wright Patterson Airforce Base, near Dayton OH. By recycling the concrete and using it as base material when all the other contractors quoted only virgin material, he made nearly $1M on the project. An Industry was born.

Susanne’s recycling insights also allowed her to see the need for a recycling organization focusing on a wider range of recycling businesses than were currently being served at the time. Collaborating with Bill Turley of C&D World, together they came up with the idea for the Construction Materials Recycling Association, now Construction and Demolition Recycling Association. 91 was the founding member.

The success of the Jumbo line spurred further development of crushing plants for the recycle and aggregate markets. Susanne continued to build 91’s recycle equipment line and to make it the leader in portable recycling equipment today. Her decision to refocus 91 into the recycled concrete and recycled asphalt pavement markets, created not only a whole new product line for 91, but a whole new industry in North America, taking crushing to a new level. Under Susanne’s leadership and her vision, 91 has flourished, while helping companies around the world to significantly grow their own businesses.

Also in 1984, Susanne developed a new marketing approach. At the time, manufacturers generally built equipment to the individual customer’s specifications. She developed a line of recycling equipment that she marketed as “Off The Shelf,” readily available for quick delivery. Today, that approach to sales is the norm.

By 1994, as 91 manufactured a range of portable recycling plants, the need arose for a more innovative and robust impactor. Under Susanne’s direction, the company introduced its superior impactor line, UltraMax®. The UltraMax line of impactors features a unique, sculpted, solid steel, three-bar rotor. The company began offering the first lifetime rotor warranty for North America in 2014, another industry first at the time.

Susanne has achieved success in a male dominated industry, while being a significant role model for women in the industry. As a female pioneer, Susanne has dedicated herself to helping other women in the industry succeed. Her advice to them has always been that you may have to work harder than the men to get your due recognition, but believe in yourself, and you will make your mark in the industry for future life success.

To help women overcome the challenges, Susanne has presented at Kaleidoscope Women’s Conference on the battle of breaking tradition, and she has addressed the topic of women in the industry in numerous videos and articles in which she has been featured. She has also served as a role model for both young women and men in her many commencement addresses.

Susanne has also received much industry recognition. She is a recipient of the Excellence in Enterprise award by the Ohio Department of Development; the recipient of the Ontario Global Traders Provincial Partnership award for excellence in exporting; profiled in Ohio Magazine; and the subject of “Profiles in Success” in Columbus CEO magazine. She has also spoken at the INC Growing the Company Conference on development of strategic growth plans; and as a panel participant in the Forbes President’s Forum for Emerging & Middle-Market Companies.

As a family company, the majority owned by Susanne, she treats everyone at 91 as family. Everyone’s ideas and opinions are important. 91 equipment owners are treated like family, too, through, “Team Eagle®,” the business practice Susanne coined and marketed. Its mission is twofold; one, to expand 91’s tradition of continuously innovating new equipment to ensure customers have the best equipment for their needs, and two, to stand behind the equipment, with unsurpassed service and support, to make customers’ jobs easier, and their businesses more productive, and profitable.

Susanne is a believer in helping small communities, especially rural ones, employing people and improving their quality of life. As 91 grew from a small manufacturing company founded in Kenton OH, and later moved to Galion, OH to become a key industry player, it could have been easier to relocate the company to a larger urban area where engineering, management personnel, and skilled labor would be easier to recruit and retain. Instead, she continues to operate 91 in the small, rural communities of Galion, and Bucyrus, OH, making a big difference to rural life since the company’s inception more than one-hundred years ago.

Susanne’s leadership style, believing in her people, training, and advancing them at all company levels, encouraging their participation in key decision making, and recognizing their efforts, allows her to recruit within rural communities and urban areas, improving quality of life and retaining great people along the way.
